13 Reasons Why...Do You Need Some Help Here?

Hiiiiiii Guys!!!
How have you all been?

It's been 6 months since my last post...NO...I'm not back for good. I'm actually still enjoying my blog free life, but with so many people reaching out to get my opinion on the Netflix teen drama, 13 Reasons Why, I thought it was probably a good time to come out of retirement...for a minute!

Did I watch? OF COURSE I WATCHED. I devoured the entire series in a weekend!

Was it good? YES it was very good.

Was it upsetting and disturbing...yes, but there are a LOT of other shows that I've watched that are way more upsetting and way more disturbing!

Should you watch it...YES! Especially if you are a parent.

What if I don't have kids? I'd still recommend it!

Should your kids watch it?
Here's where things get complicated...

Let's just take a step back for a minute...In case you've been living under a rock or just busy trying to learn Snapchat or figure out the words to the new Bieber/Khaled tune, maybe I should quickly explain the premise of this show:

The entire premise focus's on a pretty high school girl named Hannah Baker who has committed suicide. She's left 13 cassette tapes to be passed among all of the people who have contributed to her decision.

The show's really good. High school isn't easy for anyone. Well...maybe for some, but for most of us normal people who were just trying to figure it all out, it wasn't easy. I thought Hannah's story was very real and very compelling and just goes to prove that most of the time, what we see on the outside, what we judge, what we choose to believe, isn't always the truth.

When I finished watching the show, I texted my son, some of his friends and my teenage nieces (not sure I texted my nephew now that I think about it) to see if they had all watched it. My immediate reaction was that EVERY teenager should watch and EVERY parent of a teenager should watch.  As the show went viral and more and more people devoured it, schools got involved and sent out emails and phone recordings alerting parents about how this show glorifies suicide. I didn't think so at all. I think it was a very good depiction of how horrible suicide is, how it affects everyone left behind and what it really looks like.

There is one scene, THE scene, where Hannah gets in a bathtub in her parents home and slits her wrists with a razor blade. It was horrifying and disturbing and I can't imagine anyone not being moved to tears when her parents find her.

I think for me, what was most disturbing was how I felt her parents provided a loving home for Hannah and still had no idea what was really going on with their daughter. This was scary. I talk to my kid...A LOT! Probably too much. I THINK I know him. I THINK I know what's going on with him and this show made me feel uneasy. Do I REALLY know?

We all remember some story, or rumor about someone we went to high school with that defined them for their entire high school career. The slut, the gambler, the jock on juice, whatever...we all believed the rumor, but had no real proof of anything and that was that for 4 years. This show really shows what those kinds of rumors can do to anyone, especially in a social media world. There's a ripple effect. If one person watches this show and realizes how damaging their actions can be and changes their own behavior, I consider it a win. If there is someone out there who really thinks suicide is an option to ease their pain, I think watching this show could help...I really do.

As a Mom, I want my son, my nieces, my son's friends, other parents and educators to all watch this show. Yes it's uncomfortable, but it's important too. Would I recommend a 6th grader watch? Depends on the 6th grader. You know your kid...you know what they've already been watching and seeing...you should know what they can and cannot handle. Don't shy away from this opportunity to at least have the conversation.

Watch...let me know what you think.

Miss You Guys
Hope this helps...

Still WWTM...Kristy

Maybe Weekly Would Work?

Is it me or is there just too much content to keep up with?
I used to pride myself on my ability to keep up with movies, TV shows, music, pop culture, and even books. Well, it's HARD these days isn't it? Amazon keeps releasing stuff,  Netflix keeps releasing stuff and of course we have the networks and CBS All Access and there just isn't enough time to cover it all. I actually feel relief when I watch a new show that sucks or when an old show jumps the shark and I can delete a Season Pass and cross the show off my to do list. The bar has been raised for any show to make my personal Must See TV schedule. It's got to be GOOD. Good enough to lift my head away from Candy Crush, Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, YouTube and email.

The Week in Review

I'm not a Woody Allen fan at all but of course I was super curious and had to check out Crisis in Six Scenes on Amazon. I lasted six minutes. Awful.

Can't wait to be done with Transparent. I have 4 eps left. It's true what they say about the Emmy's, they do bring viewers to programs they might not ordinarily check out. I keep going back to watch this one because it won the Best Comedy Emmy. I don't want to have a serious case of FOMO,  BUT this show is super depressing and makes me feel so incredibly uncomfortable. If Jill Soloway really lives with people like this on a daily basis, she must be on some serious meds to keep her sanity. Moira Fefferman is the LEAST of it. I know I say it every possible chance I get, but I just can't get past the fact that this show continues to win awards in comedy categories and there isn't one SECOND of funny. NOT ONE!!!! Most Depressing...YES! Most Dysfunctional...Absolutely! Most Uncomfortable...WINNER! Best Comedy??? No F'ing Way!!!!

Thank God for Jeff Probst and Survivor. I can ALWAYS count on it. Survivor never disappoints. It consistently evolves, surprises and keeps me interested and engaged. This season we have Gen X'ers vs. Millenials and it's really quite interesting how different the 2 generations really are. Big differences and little differences. There was one small moment last week where the tribes had to return a tarp Jeff gave them. The Gen X'ers folded their tarp perfectly and gave it back to Jeff. The Millenials had the tarp in a messy ball and just threw it on the ground knowing he'd retrieve it and take care of it. The weather's insane this season, the people are nuts and the game is riveting.

With so much content out there to keep up with, having 2 shows with the word Survivor in the title on the same night COULD be confusing, but Designated Survivor couldn't be any more different than the original Survivor. We got Kiefer Sutherland as President Thomas Kirkland. 11th in line for the job and trying his best to lead the country after the entire government was blown to smithereens during the State of the Union. There are quite a few  Jack Bauer moments. Little hints of the guy we loved who could kick anyone's ass without ever eating or peeing. Kirkland's had a few panic attacks and has needed to hide away for some deep breath execises, but you can't blame him, he's really in way over his head. I feel bad for Kiefer. He's not aging well at all. He needs some Botox or he needs the camera person to pull back a bit, add a filter or two, or maybe get a lighting specialist??? There are way too many close-ups that don't do the guy any favors at all.  I'm loving this show but sometimes it feels a little too close to home with all the terrorism stuff. Designated Survivor broke the record for TV's largest Live+ 7 day increase. The show gained an additional 7.7 million viewers ousting Big Bang Theory's 7.2 million.

Pretty sure only 3 of my readers watch Power on Starz. You guys really need to get on this one and binge the first 3 seasons. It's SO good. The finale last weekend was great even though there were a few things that were ridiculous and made no sense at all. Yes, I will admit, that some of the acting isn't the greatest, but Ghost, Tommy and Fitty/Fifty Cent are all enough to keep you coming back. Fitty/Fifty is one bad mother'fer.

If you're a Mom, better yet, if you're a single Mom, you gotta check out  Better Things on FX. Pamela Adlon's awesome, her fake kids are too. Lots of great cameos and guest stars like Lenny Kravitz, but it's Celia Imrie as Sam's Mom who steals the show. You'll recognize her, but you won't know where you've seen her before. Even I had to IMDB it. She's British in real life and in the show. No explanation on her Britishness, but seriously, hilarious. The scene from this weeks episode with Lenny Kravitz was drop-the-mic HILARIOUS!

Second ep of This is Us didn't disappoint.  Most 2nd eps are tough but this one was strong, had one of my favorite songs of all time, Dire Straits "Romeo & Juliet"  and another crazy twist at the end. NBC already gave it a full season order. Lets just hope the writers are on their game and can keep the surprises coming for 20 more episodes. Tall order but I'm keeping my fingers crossed.

Gotta admit, I didn't think Kenya Barris, the showrunner for Black-ish would bend over and make his writers spend one second of their time coming up with a bullshit 30 minute Disneyland commercial for ABC & Disney, but he did. VERY disappointing. At least the 2nd episode of the season was the type of episode we've come to expect. God was the subject matter and once again brilliantly done. Does Disney World need the help? I didn't think so, but maybe I'm wrong? Let's hope Kenya did his good deed, got his raise or his parking spot or something and won't have to take it up the butt again this season or any other for that matter.

Thumbs up to The Goldbergs, Queen Sugar, Empire and The Good Place.
Did anyone notice Cookie's ENORMOUS gold tire-like bracelets this week? No way she could drive a car, send an email, get ANYTHING out of her bag, or wipe herself when she went to the bathroom. I can't find a photo or I would post it because they were insane.

Liev and Naomi are done...sort of bummed by that news

First CBS and Viacom were two, then they were one, then they broke up and now, it looks like they're trying to work things out and get back together...again! The lawyers are probably psyched by this one, not sure anyone else is

86 million people watched Hillary and Trump, betting NOBODY watches the VP Debate tomorrow night.

SNL delivered its highest Season Premiere in 8 years. The show delivered a 5.8 rating. Did you see it? OMFG too funny! Here are the best clips:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oC4VXwFibWY

All week long people were posting about a Will & Grace reunion. I kept telling everyone it wasn't true, it wasn't true. I knew it wouldn't be a REAL reunion. I knew Netflix wasn't bringing the series back like they did with Full House or The Gilmore Girls. The gang got together for Hillary Clinton. This clip has already been viewed over 5 million times, so maybe Netflix, Hulu, Crackle or someone SHOULD think about it getting the gang together for a real revival.  What have Sean Hayes, Eric McCormack, Debra Messing and Megan Mullaley actually been doing? Nothing that great that I'm aware of. If you haven't seen it...

Lip Sync Battle's been sucking lately, but the trailer for the new season is awesome. Check it out:

I haven't seen last nights John Oliver yet, but last week's show was so good that I've watched it twice. If you didn't see it, take a moment, a real moment and watch the entire clip. Whether you're a Hillary fan or a Trump fan, I think you'd appreciate Oliver's take on things.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h1Lfd1aB9YI

My favorite late night clip of the week? James Corden and The Backstreet Boys.

Don't Get Too Excited...I'm Not Back Full Time...But the Jets REALLY stunk and I had some time to kill

Hi Guys!

There really wasn't a GOOD time to end the blog.  I could have waited until Big Brother ended or for the Emmy's or until after all the new Fall shows premiered. I probably could have found a reason to keep prolonging the end until Christmas or New Years or the blog's 7 year anniversary in February. That's why I pulled the plug so abruptly. No slow build up, not countdown, no big sendoff... just done. Of course now...I have so much to say and share that I figured I'd just vomit it all out to give my brain a break and make some room to remember my keys and pick up Cetaphil on the way home from the office. I'm not sure how often I'll need to make brain space. It definitely won't be every day or even every week. When the feeling hits, this will be the result. I hope you're all still interested when I get the urge. Anyway, here's everything I need to get off my chest and out of my head.

Big Brother
Paul's an idiot. He got cocky, thought he could (and would) beat anyone and chose to go to the final two against Snoutlet Nicole instead of James. As much as I wanted James to win, his game wasn't great and Paul would have probably beaten him unanimously. As all of us BB fans now know, Paul made a $450K mistake. Did you see his face when Snoutlet Nicole won the money? He was SHOCKED! I hope he went home, shaved that beard and smacked himself REALLY hard in the face.

Ray Donovan
A bit of a boring season finale. Just happy that Javy's okay. Sort of lame that Abby's cancer miraculously disappeared and that nothing really happened with Connor and the gun or Bridget or even Mickey. I don't know...a bit disappointing overall really.

This is Us
Okay, please tell me you guys watched and LOVED this show. It started off with an awesome Milo Ventimiglia butt shot and just got better and better and ended with one of the best twists I can remember. No way anybody saw THAT coming. I don't want to ruin anything for anyone who hasn't watched yet, so I won't talk about the twist in detail. If you did watch it please tell me you loved it as much as I did!!!

The Good Place
Okay...I've had a Kristen Bell/Dax Shepherd crush for a while. I don't know when it started really.  I've never watched Veronica Mars or House of Lies and I haven't seen Bad Moms. Of course I saw Frozen but that wasn't it. I love Dax on Howard, I love that Dax is in love with Brad Pitt, and I love Dax and Kristen's Samsung commercials, but I think, the true crushing may have started when I saw this video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vgL3puDfuRg  Because of the crush, I tuned in to Kristen's new show on NBC, The Good Place, and I realllllly liked it. I'm not sure it can go on forever and ever but she's so damn cute and funny that I'm going to ride it out as long as I can.

Speaking of Brad Pitt...are you guys as obsessed with Brad and Angelina's divorce as I am? Why are we all so obsessed? I'll tell you why...because they're both two of the hottest humans on the planet. She's nuts, he's a stoner, they lead a pretty interesting life and have all those kids and all that money and Brad's look-a-like daughter wants to be his look-a-like son. I have a theory as to what the real problem is: Brad's pissed, really pissed, that he can never tap that wife of his because all those kids probably sleep in that custom giant bed they had built for the family.  I get it, Brad, I really do. It's toooo much. Too many kids, too many issues, too many frequent flyer miles, too much. No way Clooney says come to the lake and bring your 6 kids. No way! Brad's bummin, but mark my words, he'll be partying with Amal and George in Italy very soon and that will REALLY piss Angie off!

Pitch
We love baseball in our house. I know this is a controversial statement, but I would say we love it more than any other sport. Yes...even more than football. So we were really looking forward to FOX's baseball drama, Pitch and to be honest, I am reallly rooting for Mark Consuelos. I feel like he lives in Kelly's shadow and needs something big.  This show's good enough to give him that, but nobody watched the premiere. It's good guys...check it out, give it a chance. Major League Baseball's in on it. There's real uniforms, scores, announcers and more. It's the story of the first female MLB player, Ginny Baker. Hoping you guys give this one a chance.

Married At First Sight: NICK is a dick...that's all I really have to say.

The Goldbergs
Breakfast Club tribute episode was awesome. One thing though...I thought Erica was a senior last year. They kept talking about college and where she was going to go and now, this year...she's still a senior. Did I imagine that? Could SWEAR she was a senior, but maybe I'm crazy.

Apparently, Garry Shandling's last wish was for the Larry Sanders Show to be available on HBO for everyone to check out. Now...it is. If you've never seen the show, it should definitely be added to your binge list. I think I need to add it to the WWTM one too. Of course I've seen um all, but I may need to rewatch them when I have the time. A true game changer.

Margot Robbie will host the SNL Season Premiere. Why?

Happy for Dice...Showtime renewed his show for a second season.

FX gave 2nd season renewels to Better Things (which I love) and Atlanta (which I don't)

Did you see Between 2 Ferns with Hillary Clinton? If not...you need to:

Samantha Bee is getting better and better. Did you see last week's episode?

Notice how there aren't any Fallon must see clips???

Stephen Colbert had Bruce Springsteen on last Friday night. It was one of the best interviews with Bruce I've ever seen. If you're a Bruce fan, you NEED to watch

Okay...that's all I got for now...
I feel better and lighter and at this point I'm pretty confident that I'll know why I stopped at CVS on my way home from work.

Hope You'll Join Me for the Emmy's Tonight!!!

Hey Guys!
Hope you all had a great week!

I've been trying out some great NYC Restaurants, catching up with friends, going to the gym and chilling. Can't say I've made a healthy dinner yet but give me some time. Still keeping up with allllll my TV, just at a different pace. Sleeping a bit later, going to bed a bit earlier and seeing how this new no-blog life goes for a bit.

TV THIS WEEK:
-Big Bro's down to the final 3-Of course I want James to win, but the best game has been played by Paul so if he wins I'm good. Nicole (aka Snoutlet) too...if she wins I'm okay with that. She's played a great game.

-Binged Queen Sugar. LOVE

-Watched a great documentary about the Marijuana industry in Denver called Rolling Papers. Highly Recommend that one!

-I'm in the middle of the Ron Howard Beatles Documentary, Eight Days A Week and LOVING IT!

-Looking forward to a few premieres this week especially, This is Us but right now I'm heading over to E! and some Emmy Red Carpet Coverage.

I've been posting stuff all week on the Watching Way Too Much Facebook page. Please check it out and join me for Emmy Red Carpet and then Emmy's LIVE COVERAGE!!!

Miss You Guys...but not enough to come back full time.

It's Time for a Change

September 13 2016

To All My Faithful Readers...

It's time for a change...

For the past few months I've been really struggling to keep this blog going. It's been getting tougher for me to stay awake each night to watch everything I feel I should be watching in order to provide relevant, timely commentary each day. Don't forget, I have a day job, a husband, a 15 year old son and 2 dogs.  I really feel like I'm sitting too much, exercising too little and putting other things aside so that I can watch TV.

I won't be completely silent.  I'm going to keep the Watching Way Too Much Facebook Page going with commentary, news, thoughts, clips etc. but I just don't think I can produce 5 blogs a week that are interesting, funny and timely any longer.

I have LOVED every minute of this endeavor. I'm grateful for the community this blog has created. I've really enjoyed all of your friendship, comments & support.  I want to thank you all for being part of this time in my life.

No idea what it will feel like without this space for all of my thoughts about the medium I love so much. Maybe I'll come back to it, but for now...I'm going to take an extended leave of absence and see if I get to the gym, cook healthier dinners, take more walks & see more of my friends.

I'm DEFINITELY going to be live for the Emmy's on Sunday...so if you aren't already a Facebook Friend...please check out the page.

Thank You All for Everything
Kristy Carruba

THE SHOWS

Congratulations to Stan Wawrinka on a huge US Open win! Pretty good tennis! My Jets lost, my Yankees lost but the Giants did pull out a win. Reading of the names on 9/11 always tough. Quite the Sunday...

Better Things
If you don't watch Louis CK's show, Louie, you might not know who Pamela Adlon is. You might recognize her voice from King of the Hill, Bob's Burgers, Phineas and Ferb and a bunch more. Finally, the woman's got her own show and I LOVE it. Better Things reminds me a little bit of Louis CK's show. He's a single dad with 2 daughters, working as a comedian. She's a single mom with 3 daughters working as an actress. The weird thing is, I don't love Louis's show but I think I might love Pamela's show. Maybe she's just more relatable? Or maybe she doesn't seem as pathetic as Louis? Check it out and let me know what you think.

Masters of Sex

I know after last season, I said I was giving up Masters of Sex, but Showtime had the Season 4 premiere episode available early so I decided to check it out JUST to be sure. Here's the thing...once Ray Donovan and Big Brother end, I could actually have some room on Sunday nights. The premiere episode was pretty boring. Bill's a mess, Virginia's a mess and Betty's the only one doing any work. Libby's angry and trying to find her way in the world without Bill by hangin out with man-hating bra burners. There were 2 interesting things about this episode. 1) The guy with the high heel shoe fetish and 2) Hugh Hefner. Hope they both stick around for awhile. The sex is still missing which is why I was going to give the show up in the first place. I haven't made my final decision yet, it's all going to come down to sex, scheduling and football.

Big Brother
  • Glad to see Cory and Snoutlet thinking correctly...if they want a shot at winning...they gotta get rid of Paul or Victor
  • Editor made 10 minutes of the butter slide comp seem like 10 hours
  • I love watching people fall...so does Victor.
  • APAULO Ono??? lame Victor, lame
  • Looked like Paul was pooping butter
  • Cory won HOH which could be good for James
  • James is missing Natalie. At least he has her flip flops to snuggle up to
  • Cory put salt in Snoutlet's water and she ended up spitting it all over him. Bad plan
  • Cory loves T Swift...awwww he wants to me a member of her squad . Pretty sure its girls only, Cory
  • Victor has a funny way of flirting with Nicole...spitballs to the glasses?
  • The BB house makes people do weird things like making a Snoutlet sandwich between Cory and Victor
  • Cory stayed up all night and cleaned the entire house like a crazy person just to keep the voices inside his head at bay. The question is: Did anyone notice?
  • It really annoys me that Snoutlet's eyebrows peak above her glasses
  • I like what Cory said "I'm playing Big Brother, not Big Baby"
  • Cory actually grew a pair of balls and put Paul and Victor up because as he so eloquently put it "Mama didn't raise no bitch" Great game play. Making a big move when a big move is needed could win this idiot the game.

Lip Sync Battle Live
There was a live Lip Sync Battle last night. I was pretty excited by the entire thing. 4 celebs perform one song each and America votes. Just like most of our elections though, this contest was also rigged. There's no way America voted for Michael Phelps. No offense, but for a guy who listens to music so intensely on his big headphones, you'd think he'd be able to actually lip sync to the song of his choice. Maybe it's the speech impediment or something but the guy should NOT have won the belt. Olivia Munn or John Legend should have taken the title, they were SO much better than Terry Crews or Phelps. Olivia Munn had Olympic gymnasts, John Legend had Stevie Wonder. Liked the new format, but hated the voting because I thought it was total BS!
Check out the performances:
Terry Crews "Fight the Power" https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DFdmCi7Cais
Olivia Munn "Have Fun Tonight" http://www.spike.com/video-clips/cno0fc/lip-sync-battle-olivia-munn-loves-cheap-thrills
John Legend "Hey Ya" with Stevie Wonder-Can't find this clip and he was better than Terry and Michael!
Michael Phelps "Lose Yourself" http://www.etonline.com/tv/197725_michael_phelps_simone_biles_and_aly_raisman_make_lip_sync_battle_s_live_all_star_show_a_rio_reunion/

THE OTHER STUFF

-Denis Leary was really mean to me once. Karma's a bitch. His FX show,  Sex&Drugs&Rock&Roll was canceled after Season 2. Bummer Denis.

-I have nothing at all against any of the women of Mistresses so I'm sorry their show was canceled even though I never watched it.

-I was truly shocked to read that Hell's Kitchen was renewed for its 18th season. 18 seasons!!! Who knew?

-The Creative Arts Emmy's were given out over the weekend. Peter Scolari, who was actually a replacement nominee, won for Best Guest Actor for Girls. The People vs. OJ won a bunch, Game of Thrones won a bunch, Tina Fey and Amy Poehler won for hosting SNL and James Corden won. Here's the full list of winners: https://www.yahoo.com/tv/2016-creative-arts-emmy-awards-complete-winners-list-022643387.html

Yankees win, Broncos win Serena loses & guess who was evicted from the Big Brother house?

Big Brother

  • I think last night was Julie's best dressed night of the season
  • Love on the rocks for Jatalie
  • Love #butfirst
  • Sometimes James's hair looks super greasy
  • Hated Snoutlets sunglasses
  • Now Cory's my boy? I thought Paul was my boy
  • Jeff and Jordan...Jeff and Jordan. Married, preggers having a little boy who won't be named Sailor. They are the cutest
  • DaVonne's recap of what's been going on in the jury house was pretty funny
  • Paulie's closest ally was CORY? not Zakiyah? Ooooh that has to burn her butt
  • Paulie's hair in the house wasn't looking so good hope he gets it cut before finale night
  • Natalie's eviction speech and Julie chat was super annoying
  • If any part of Jatalie had to go home, I'm glad it was the ATALIE part
  • Do we think Natalie got sparkles all over Julie's dress?
  • Natalie def doesn't know what a soul mate is
  • What was up with the basil plant? I thought she was going to give it to Julie, but she just held on to that thing
  • Love the buttery slip and slide challenge but now we don't know who the HOH is. I really want James to win it
THE OTHER STUFF

-The Last Ship's third season's just about over but no worries, they'll be setting sail for a 4th and 5th season. Another 2 season renewal.

-I reallllllly hope my friend Neil Moffatt watches this. Check out these iphone 7 losers on Jimmy Kimmel last night: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HxXbrnJ6l4A

-Another funny Kimmel clip...This week "Sully" opens in theatres, but check out "Hanks" https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pbULDhHWnno

-I was pretty sure I was giving Masters of Sex up this season, but the trailer they showed during Big Brother makes me want to check it out. Could they have fixed it? Ooooo I hope so.
