YES...28.8 million viewers for the Summer Olympics is amazing, especially these days, BUT...compared to London's 38.4 million viewers it's not the greatest story in the world. Of course it's not necessarily an apples to apples comparison. Sure traditional viewership is down 19% but viewer's habits have changed since 2012. Digital consumption has more than tripled . Streaming is up 266% vs London when there really was no streaming option. Interest in general seems to have fallen. The Opening Ceremonies and the one night, so far, of non MIchael Phelps coverage is proof of this but the Olympics are still the place to be if you have a message you want to get out there during these 2 weeks. NBC'll have to figure something out for all of the Olympic advertisers who were guaranteed a 17.5 rating, but that's just the nature of the landscape these days. Too many choices, too many platforms and of course Pokemon Go isn't helping either.

THE SHOWS

I've been up since 3AM. Couldn't sleep. Decided to cuddle up with my iPad and catch up on the 4 episodes of Kingdom that were sitting waiting for me. I am bursting with the need to get people to watch this show. You all NEED to witness the talents of Byron Balasco, Frank Grillo, Jonathan Tucker, Matt Lauria, Nick Jonas, Kiele Sanchez, Joanna Going, and Paul Hauser. This show is so damn good and I don't know one person watching it. I have to rely on the unknown fans I now call my friends on Twitter and Facebook to talk to about what just happened between the Kulina brothers. The show's rough and gritty and intense and complex and interesting. This broken, damaged, dysfunctional, loving, caring, screwed up family is made of a bunch of some of the best characters (and best actors) I've ever let into my life. I know I've told you about it before, I know a lot of you guys don't have Direct TV, and don't want to spend the money but I'm BEGGING YOU to fork over the dough and start bingeing. You can buy Season 1 on DVD on Amazon for 25 bucks. It can be at your house for the weekend! If you have a friend who has Direct TV, trade them dinner for their ID and Password.

I did watch some Olympics last night.
Some thoughts:

  • When did glitter become such a big part of women's gymnastics?
  • Aly Raisman is going to look back at her performance years from now and REALLY regret that crazy bun deluxe look
  • What happens to a gymnast's body when they retire? Does it become a normal body? Has anyone seen Kerri Strug or Mary Lou Retton lately?
  • Why do the swimmers were double bathing caps?
  • I am extremely grateful for the line in the pool that tells me where my American swimmers are in the race
  • There's a LOT of volleyball
  • You would think by now they'd invent clear chalk so the gymnasts and their equipment isn't covered in white
  • I enjoy the in-pool camera
  • Simone Biles is amazing but if you're a Howard Stern fan, have you noticed any resemblance between Simone and Beetlejuice?
  • What does Michael Phelps do with his 21 Gold Medals?
  • How is it possible to win the US Open and lose so quickly at the Olympics?
Married at First Sight
All of the weddings are over, the dresses, tuxedos and make-up are gone and the couples are heading on their honeymoons. Nick and Sonia totally got gypped in my opinion.  Courtyard by Marriott??? The fact that Sonia's afraid of dogs is a problem for me and I know it will be a big problem for Nick. I'm hating Heather. She keeps saying she's not going to nitpick, not going to judge and that's exactly what she's doing. She really should look in the mirror. She's got some serious acne and a bad case of Resting Bitch Face. If Derek's into her and occasionally smokes or gambles, LET IT GO! Heather told the experts she didn't mind an occasional smoker but she obviously lied. Derek seems like a good guy but I think he's doomed. I have high hopes for Tom and Lillian but the dude does live in a bus. They are very affectionate with each other, maybe a bit too much, but they have the best shot in my opinion with the exception of the bus situation. Lillian keeps saying alll the right things but I have a feeling when she steps up into his humble abode on wheels, it's going to be a HUGE problem. Is Lillian losing her hair? I swear at certain moments when the light is just right, she looks like she has a serious bald spot.

THE OTHER STUFF

-I guess it's time for me to download and learn all about Snapchat now that NBC has thrown its hat into the ring and will produce Snapchat shows. They're going to tap into The Voice, SNL and Fallon. They're not repurposing content, they're producing unique content just for the platform. For "The Voice on Snapchat," users will submit performances judged by "coaches."  Not sure who those coaches will be at this point. I get the feeling from what I've read that it's NOT Adam, Blake, Gwen or Xtina. E!'s also heading over to Snapchat with a news/pop culture show that will debut on 9/8 called "The Rundown."

-Lorne's obviously not just sitting at the pool, playing cards with Bono and having the chef rustle up some surf-n-turf. Another SNL casting cut was sent down yesterday. Not sure any of you know who Jon Rudnitsky even was, he barely got any SNL airtime. Only bummer is he's a Jersey guy, actually a Bergen County guy, so I was hoping he'd do better than he did. Lorne sent him packing yesterday. 3 SNL'ers down so far. How in the world is Kyle Mooney still a cast member? What's Lorne smoking out there on those dunes, that guy REALLY needs to go, Lorne.

-Can you wrap your brain around the Martha Stewart/Snoop Dogg VH1 show? Do you think Martha and Snoop sat down lit up a spliff, got the munchies and came up with this cooking show competition idea together? That alone would be a great show to watch.  I never watch cooking competition shows but I just have to check this thing out when it premieres.

Wednesday's Trivia Question: What was the name of the doctor who moved to Cicely Alaska to practice medicine?
