THE SHOWS

The Vampire Diaries
There's some crazy sh*t going on in Mystic Falls. Crazier than usual. A new bad guys in town, back from the other side. This guy Marcos. I'm pretty sure he's the head of the travellers and he wants to take over Mystic Falls. What is it about Mystic Falls that makes everyone want to live there? I'd think there'd be some better places, some place near the water, or in the mountains like Edward and Jacob, but nope…it's Mystic Falls. Anyway, Marcos put this spell on Stefan and Elena that had them both experiencing these romantic dreams of a normal life. One they will obviously never have. It made Damon crazy. So crazy, he never wants to see Elena again. Matt got killed…again. Luckily he had on his never die ring so it didn't last long. He did get to see his sister, Vicky, but she disappeared into the sky.

Parks & Recreation
Triplets? WHY? I was bummed enough that Leslie and Ben were preggers but now Triplets? Maybe Dr. Fonzarelli was reading the sonogram wrong? As Ben said "We are so bleeping screwed."  He and Leslie are, but I think all of us are too. Still feels like some shark jumping stuff to me. If the triplet thing wasn't enough of a sign, Ron Swanson didn't just smile in this weeks episode, he wore a crown and allowed his face to experience a huge sh*t eating grin. I can see Jaws in the air! Donna's new BF is the Key & Peele guy right? Is he Key or Peele? I'm really hoping that I'm wrong about all of this. There are so many great actors in this show and  the writing is still strong so maybe the smiling Ron Swanson and the triplets can somehow work? I'm thinking positively.

Reign
Damn it…I thought for sure that Nostradamus and Olivia were finally leaving the castle, but noooooo. Katherine guilted him in to staying put and sending Olivia away on her own. I hate Nostradamus, he bugs the crap out of me and now I'm stuck with him and that weird whispery voice. Penelope aka Anastasia Steele was also sent packing. The King, thanks to the Queen put a halt to his Christian Gray ways and now seeks god for his help. Lola's grown suspect of her fiance and didn't sign over her dowry to him. Probably a smart move. Francis had to torture a guy before leaving with Mary for Scotland. Her brother, who looks a lot like Colin Farrell urged her to get back home and help her country but it was really a scam so that he'd become King. Francis had to lock up his wife in the tower to protect his wife but that TOTALLY pissed her off big time.  Did you notice the song Lola danced to at her wedding? Tough one and huge bonus points if you get it.

Scandal Season Finale
Definitely didn't see that coming. Isn't that how I start every Scandal recap? Olivia's dad is SO evil that he would kill the President's son? That's INSANE! Sure he did it for his daughter and yes, it did get the guy re-elected and gave us a minimum of 4 more seasons of the show, but still that's some pretty crazy sh*t! Fitz wasn't having a good day even before he lost Jerry Jr. Olivia told him about his Dad raping his wife, so even though he loves and needs and wants to be with Olivia forever, forever needs to wait a while. I'm guessing it needs to wait 4 more years. Equally disturbing, Huck doing Quinn over the desk in the office and Abby walking in on them. OMG that was nuts. Not sure what will happen to them now that Charlie found Huck's family. We have to assume that Olivia and Jake will come back from wherever it is they took their private jet to. She'll go have that baby and be back in DC and her signature cool white clothes in September. Wait til she finds out that her Dad's back in charge of B613, David Rosen's taking them down and her Mom's in a box in the ground alive. She's not going to be happy. She also might be pissed that Harrison's dead and that her Dad had him killed too. Great season, great finale and of course I gotta ask you to name the final song of the season.

Parenthood Season Finale
We have no idea if Parenthood's coming back or not and I gotta be honest, last nights episode worked as a season finale and/or a series finale. It had everything I'd wanted it to. Of course the tear count was high. A bit higher than normal, but all in all I'm good with where we netted out. Haddie's home and she's a lesbian. Adam and Kristina handled it beautifully because we'd expect nothing less from them. Victor, who had been struggling in school won the essay contest and read us the amazing story of his year fixing the GTO with his Grandpa. Joel and Julia came together and now we think they might be okay. Hank and Sarah are giving it a shot, Drew got the girl AND the car (that part killed me), Max got a suit, the house got packed up and that's was a wrap. I sure hope that isn't the last time I see the Braverman and peek into their lives, but if it is, I want to thank them all for letting me in. Of course I have to thank Jason Katims for giving me this family for a while. They aren't perfect, but they're really special and like the Taylor's of Friday Night Lights, they inspire us, give us hope and a benchmark of how we wish our families could be and how we hope we can be. If I don't see them all again next season,  I'll miss them.

THE OTHER STUFF

-Comcast did a study and gave customers access to many different TV series through it's on-demand and streaming products for Watchathon Week. Here's what they found out:

  • "Comcast customers used Watchathon to catch-up on Game of Thrones in advance of the season four premiere. As a result, live ratings for the premiere were 17 percent higher in Comcast households compared to non-Comcast households across the country.  Additionally, 675,000 viewers caught the premiere on Xfinity On Demand within the first three days-- growing the national audience an additional 10 percent.
  • The second season of Fox’s The Mindy Project came back from hiatus during Watchathon Week. Live ratings for this episode were 60 percent higher. Even more impressive; the April 8 post-Watchathon episode had a ratings lift in Comcast households of 83 percent.
  • The latest episode of FX’s Archer aired on March 31 and saw a 78 percent live ratings lift.
  • The April 8 episode of NBC’s Chicago Fire saw 30 percent higher live ratings.
  • The latest episode of NBC’s Grimm saw a 65 percent lift in live ratings.
  • The latest episode of Fox’s breakthrough documentary Cosmos aired on Sunday, April 6 and saw 27 percent higher live ratings.
  • The April 10 episode of NBC’s Parks and Recreation saw an impressive 49 percent ratings lift."
Basically what this tells us is that by making more episodes of existing shows available for consumers to catch up on drives bigger live viewing. Comcast could have just asked me this…I would have told them the same thing.

-If you haven't seen Jared Leto's documentary, Artifact, I'm urging you to set your DVR's to check it out. VH1 is going to air it on 4/26. Its the story of the legal battle Jared's band, 30 Seconds to Mars, had with their record label. Really sheds light on the music business. I loved it.

-Yeahearly Christmas present for me! ABC's giving me (and you) another season of The Great Christmas Light Fight

The other day, on Ellen, Dax Shephard from Parenthood was a guest and spoke of his Brad Pitt obsession. What I loved was that he's just like usobsessed with a celebrity, in his case a true man crush that I totally get. It was hilarious and Ellen gave him the greatest gift ever. THE SHOWS
Parks and Recreation
I know it's going to sound weird, but I was sort of hoping that Amy Poehler wouldn't do the pregnancy thing on Parks and Rec. It's not that I don't think she and Ben wouldn't make great parents because we know they will. I just wanted something less formulaic. The second Leslie threw up into the garbage can I knew she was pregnant. She didn't need to take the 99 cent pregnancy test. (99 cents???) I just didn't want her to be pregnant. To me, that's the end of the show. Shark jumped, over. I automatically fast forwarded through all the wacky pregnancy episodes ahead to the series finale where she and Ben leave Pawnee with baby Ronson Wyatt (named for Leslie's mentor and one of the best characters ever,  Ron Swanson) and head for Washington D.C. where Leslie joins the ticket and runs as Joe Biden's V.P. I thought that Parks and Rec would be different, since it always has been, but the second that the stick turned blue or to a plus sign or whatever the 99 cent sticks symbol for baby is, I knew that season 7 would be Parks and Rec's last. Of course I could be wrong. I'm hoping I am and I'm hoping the shark heads back to the ocean and doesn't officially leave the water, but I just have a bad feeling that my beloved Parks & Rec as we once knew is no more.

Scandal
I need to meet Shonda Rhimes. How on earth does she and her writers come up with this stuff week after week.  I keep thinking that there's no way they can blow our minds more than they did the week before and then BAM, we get an episode like last nights! HOLY CR*P! Okay where do we start? Soooooo…seriously, has anyone EVER had more F'ed up parents than Olivia Pope? Mom's a crazy terrorist who has no problem killing anyone she loves including the supposed love of her life and the father of her only child. (2 separate guys btw) Dad is also a trained killer and a trainer of killers, who killed the love of his ex-wife's life in his daughters place of business. Luckily no new biz came in while he was bleeding out on her floor. With parents like this it's a wonder that Olivia became anything other than a heroine addict. If we're speaking about parents, what about Fitz's Dad who raped his son's wife and knocked her up! Well, if we're going there, Fitz and Mellie aren't the greatest in the parent department either. Sure they're the prez and the first lady, but unlike the Obama's, they never see their kids, their both having affairs, and they both seem to have issues with alcohol. The only good thing that came out of Mellie's drunken stupor last night was the final release of the secret she's been carrying around all these years about Fitz's Dad. I gotta admit though, I was hoping we'd get to see the results of Little Jerry's DNA test. Weren't you? Sure I'm glad that Sally Langston didn't get what she wanted, but I wanted to know for sure if Fitz was Little Jerry's half brother or his Dad. The Huck/Quinn sex scene in the garage was crazy, but you know we wanted it as badly as they did. I wonder if one of the secrets that the Command guys know is how Olivia gets all those pictures of clients in question so fast and how they all stick to the window without tape. With everything that goes on in this show every week, I'm still obsessed with the picture wall. I'm devastated that next week is the season finale of this show. No matter how cute Kerry Washington's kid is, I will always resent him/her for screwing me out of a full season of Scandal.  10 Points for this weeks song!

Reign
Reign is really good. It's really juicy. Other than Kenna and the King nobody on the show is super hot. Mary's pretty and both Sebastian and Francis are fine but not over the top hot which means that it's all about the story and I'm not kidding, the story is crazy good. It's amazing how much crazy sh*t can go on all in one castle all in one day. As I've mentioned before, secrets are never really kept, but when ARE secrets kept in any show? The secrets on this show tend to be revealed pretty fast though. In this episode Mary found out there was a secret clause in her marriage contract that totally screwed her and her country over big time. Within the remaining 40 minutes of the show, she had the fake contract stolen, got some of her countrymen on board with a plan to screw over her Mom and France and get the contract broken. Her men were killed by her husbands Mom (the queen) then she threatened the queen with a back-up plan and finally got and burned the contract. Roll credits. Considering there were no computers, cell phones, copy machines or technology of any kind, it's pretty amazing what can be accomplished in a castle back in the 1500's. In between all her coniving, the Queen of France got a little action herself. Good for her, I think she needed it.  Sebastian and Kenna were figuring out how to be married. I'm betting they fall in love before the end of the season. Lola got engaged, told her guy about the baby and the guy who fell for her in less than a full episode, didn't even care and still wanted to marry her. Like I said a lot goes on in this castle in a day. It's a good show, you should watch it if you aren't already.

Parenthood
Being there was a thread that was not only woven throughout this episode of Parenthood, but I guess it's sort of present throughout all of them. Joel was there for Crosby to help with his floor and Hank was there for Max, Amber and Sarah which is so hard for him and yet it seemed to come easy. Julia was there for her brother and sister-in-law to help make there dream of their own school happen.  Gwen, Kristina's chemo buddy was there for her even in death. Now the school will be there for her and Gwen's spirit can live on through all the kids she's helping. Maybe Bob Little will come through and be there for them all too. Of course Adam was there for his wife as he always is, and Sarah was there for Amber and Drew. Finally, I think Natalie might just be there for Drew too. Tears as always, it just wouldn't be Parenthood without them. One very special episode left for the season. NBC owes us an answer on this one, hope they are there for all of us.

THE OTHER STUFF

-I know you guys know about Stephen Colbert taking over for Letterman already. That's the bummer about publishing this thing so early. I thought about breaking in to your day with a "Late Breaking News" report to let you know and decided against it. From here on in if something like that happens, check the Facebook page or the Twitter feed, I'll start posting stuff there so that you know that I'm on my game. Trust me…I'm ON my game. Colbert's ending his show on Comedy Central, but I'm betting they find someone for his timeslot at some point. I bet John Oliver's kicking himself right now.  As far as how I feel about the choice. I guess, I'm fine with it. Another white guy at 11:30pm. I would have liked to see CBS take a risk and do something different but I think Colbert will be fine. I just would have liked to see things shaken up a bit. Did they have to rush to make a decision? I would have done guest hosting like Kelly did when Regis left. Just sayin.

-For the first time ever, Internet advertising spending beat broadcast TV in 2013.

Broadcast TV: 40.1 billion

Newspaper: 18 billion
Radio: 16 billion

THE SHOWS

Parks & Recreation
Leslie and the Parks Department planning the prom was a bit of a stretch even for Pawnee, but who cares. I love a good prom. Did you see the  prom to-do list in the background during the prom planning meeting? Mostly normal stuff but did you notice that they needed D'Who's?  Dads Who Help Out. good acronym.  You knew that once Leslie saw Allison's binder she'd be OBSESSED with her and fast track her for a Summer Internship that would one day result in Allison taking over for Leslie, but not if Ron Swanson had something say. Ron apparently has a 10 point Leslie intervention scale (and what appeared to be the largest, oldest cell phone ever) and her reaction to Allison was apparently an 8, so Ron had to step in and do what he does best. Provide Leslie with the guidance and advice she can't seem to get from Ben. Ben was too busy with Tom DJ'ing the prom. Who knew that it would be Ben with the killer playlist. Huskerdoo? Awesome! What was with the ill-fitting trench coat though?  Andy went the traditional route. Drinking in the limo, the tux with the aqua cummerbund and bow tie and pictures with a limping dog wearing a toupee as a stand in for April's Dad. There were glittery jackets, prom dresses, helium balloons, and net/net a good time was had by all, even April who hates proms.  Had to admit, I had to look up who Elana Kagan was, 10 points if you know without looking it up too. Favorite line of the episode was Ben's when talking about DJ'ing: "I hope that the high school gymnasiums' big enough cause I'm bringing 10,000 Maniacs"

Hollywood Game Night
What was up with Bob Harper and that gold tooth? Ewww! Donald Faison was amazing on Hollywood Game Night, can't believe his team didn't win and he wasn't picked for the bonus round. TV ID is one of the games that Donald was crazy good at. It's like name that tune but for TV shows. See if you could guess the TV shows by the clues given:

Clue: BEACH DUDES-Answer?
Clue: BEER-Answer?
Clue: PRESIDENT-Answer?
Clue: ALIEN BUREAU-Answer?
Clue: SCARY FISH-Answer?
Clue: POTHEADS-Answer?

Tough right?  I can't give you points because many of you probably saw the show. Answers are True Blood, Hawaii Five-O, Cheers, Scandal, X-Files, Shark Tank and Beavis and Butthead for those of you who didn't watch.

Scandal
Abby's attempt at filling in for Olivia at the White House wasn't bad. I guess she too has a white coat. Maybe you get one from Olivia once you take the official Gladiator oath. (Does that mean Quinn still has hers-think so) Loved Mellie in her bra and rollers. Good look. Loved the ultimatum that Olivia gave Andrew and her thing with Fitz, but I gotta admit, I really enjoyed both scenes with Jake and Olivia best. The one with the sheets between them and the one with the door between them. I assumed that Jake would catch Olivia in the act, but I guess it's just that simple. To take down B613, sleep with Command. I really thought it wouldn't be that easy and would go on forever like when SD-6 was trying to take down the Alliance on what show? Scary Jake came back at the end. I didn't love that and now there are only 2 eps left til the end of the season. Damn you Kerry Washington. We could have had a few more weeks of Scandal if it wasn't for that baby!

Parenthood
Ahhhh finally, Julia's BACK! Hair's brushed, ring is off, skirts are back on and she's cutting through red tape and kicking some Board of Education butt. The Charter School is a GO! So is Ashes of Rome's album and a tour with 4D. (3 more than 1D!) Loved seeing Julia with Evan at the release party, of course next week Joel shows up. What do you think Joel or Evan? I like Evan and I like him more than Ed. Hank's working through stuff with Dr. Pelican and trying to get Sarah back. Drew should probably check in with his Mom more often. How in the world does she not know he's been living with Amber for a month and out of the dorm she's paying big bucks for?  Zeke found a place for him and Camille and it looks perfect. Do we think they'll actually move? Has NBC decided anything yet? One more season please!

THE OTHER STUFF

Not much news to report today…just the big obvious story…

-I don't know why I was so shocked by David Letterman's announcement, but I was. I totally get it though. He's 66 years old, the time periods more competitive and crowded than ever before and I just don't see Dave posting videos to YouTube and Tweeting about anything.  I have to be honest, I've never really watched Letterman. I wasn't really a late night person until recently  (I still don't consider myself one since I watch in the morning or online.) and you know who my guy is. Dave's not exactly sure when his last day will be. Sometime in 2015 so another year to say celebrate the guy and put together all sorts of tributes and retrospectives together that will now get people to tune in.  Of course there's already speculation on who will take over at 1135pm on CBS. Any suggestions?

Friday's Trivia Question: I've been asked for a Final Four/NCAA/March Madness question and since I know NOTHING about this topic, I'll have to thank my friend Bob Kaplan for this one. If you don't like it, or it's too hard, blame him. Kentucky is starting 5 Freshman. What was the last team to do this in an NCAA Tournament Game?

I sort of feel bad…that question is pretty niche…how about a Friends Trivia Question to end the week? The chicken and the duck got stuck in Chandler and Joey's apartment. Where were they stuck?

Have a great weekend!

-Duck Dynasty's season finale may have been number one on cable Wednesday night, but the show decreased in viewers  significantly vs. last years finale. 6 million people watched this year vs. 8.4 million last year and 9.6 the year before. Is it the Phil stuff or are people just over the family already?

THE SHOWS
The Vampire Diaries
Starting off with a topless Damon Salvatore is always a good thing in my book and the sexy Damon/Elena moments are very enjoyable. My fave, throwing Elena up against a locker at school and working her into a frenzy, very enjoyable. Did you EVER say the word doppelgänger before you started watching The Vampire Diaries? I don't think I did, but now, I try to say whenever I can. Apparently Stefan's last living doppelganger was in Atlanta and needed by the travellers. They sent Caroline to get Tom Avery or they'd squeeze Stefan's brain until he lost his memories again.  Tom was a paramedic whose hair was parted to the side instead of the windblown spike-up Stefan has.  Caroline couldn't kill him, but Enzo could and now no idea what will happen to Stefan. Is there a possibility of Caroline and Stefan? That was some pretty close cuddling, no? Not sure what was more insane, the fact that Elena and Damon even went to Jeremy's parent teacher conference or the fact that they were shocked that Jeremy was doing so poorly? REALLY? Look at the kids life! His parents are dead, his girlfriend was dead and now that she's back from being dead, every time he wants to get some, a dead person burns through her to get to the other side, his sister and all her pals are vampires and oh…by the way, he's a vampire killer. He's supposed to study for a bio test too? COME ON!

Reign
The king is going mad and honestly, I'm enjoying it thoroughly. I didn't love when he put the candle wax in the guys ear, but I did enjoy it when he went back to his Christian Gray ways with Penelope the kitchen chick who won the Queen of the Bean a contest where the winner gets to wear the crown, bed the King and sit on the thrown for a day. Apparently in addition to her kitchen skills, Penelope's a dominatrix too. Who knew?  Greer was all set to marry the very cute Lord Julian but he caught her with the baker and moved on to Lola pretty fast as per Mary's plan. Just in time too because Lola's not fitting into her clothes. Now Greer will marry the gay Lord Castleroy but it's actually good for both of them because then she can still sleep with the baker and get free treats. Francis fell through the ice, Bash saved him and then Francis saved Bash from their nut job dad's sword. Sure he's alive but the King made him marry Kenna. OY.  I need Nostradamus and Olivia gone. I hate the way he speaks in that gravelly whisper and she freaks me out. Enough of them already.

Scandal
Did you TOTALLY forget about Jerry, Karen and their baby bro, Teddy? I sure did until they were back home for a big live interview with their parents. Jerry's putting Hitler mustache's on his Dad and Tweeting it out, Karen walked opened the wrong door and saw her Mom on her knees with "Uncle Andrew" and luckily baby Teddy can't talk yet. Jake's starting to speak just like Olivia and both of them sound just like Daddy Pope. Does that mean that some day Olivia will be Command? Probably not but that would be a SICK series finale wouldn't it? Olivia Pope as Command? She def couldn't do that if she had a kid. Quinn and Charlie discussing Huck's visit while torturing some terrorist was sort of interesting, but Huck and Quinn's "encounter" on the bridge was actually MORE interesting. This time it was Quinn doing the licking. Harrison got drugged by Ivy, Olivia's Mom gave her a call and Cyrus tried to smash a vase over Jake's head but you know that would never happen. Fitz came down hard on Mellie for cheating with Andrew since she wouldn't let Fitz touch her for 10 years. I thought for sure she'd tell him about his Dad, but that fact wasn't revealed…yet!  Olivia's Mom, Ivy and some guy named Ivan are planning on killing the Prez…I think, but no worries, Jake knows about it and he'll handle it, I'm sure. Okay what was the song they played last night? A good one!

Parenthood
Lots of awkward in this episode of Parenthood.
Hank and Sarah, Mark and Sarah, Joel and Julia, the kids and Drew, the kids and Amber, the teachers and The Braverman, yeesh…lots of awkward. Not to mention, sex interuptus moments are ultra awkward. Which is worse, being interrupted by your dad or your kid? I was going to do a poll on this one. Who's more annoying…Lily from Modern Family OR Sydney from Parenthood. Two cool Dad/Son moments, Crosby and Zeke's road trip along the water and Adam and Max's IN the water. Looks like Joel and Julia are done and it looks like Camille and Zeke are going to have to start packing. COME ON NBC…please announce this shows renewal…PLEASE. The renewal announcement is my cliffhanger.

THE OTHER STUFF

-It's not a done deal yet, but Amazon may be getting into the streaming biz too. Not just for Prime members but for everyone via a set top box or a Chomocast type doodad or something. If they do it will ad supported like all the other players in the space. With all the info Amazon has on all of us, it could make a great case for advertiser dollars. It hasn't been announced yet, but it could be coming soon according the Wall Street Journal. So many choices, who's going to invent the content navigation tool that best benefits all of us as consumers? I already could use one that tells me where, when and how much it would cost to watch what I want for the best experience and the best cost. With more choices coming, this "thing" will be needed more than ever.

-5 episodes of Mind Games and DONE! ABC cancelled it. Hope you didn't get too attached. I feel bad for Christian Slater, the guy needs a break.

-I'm not a huge news person, but even I was surprised by Cynthia McFadden's departure from ABC News to NBC and Juju Chang's promotion to co-anchor of Nightline

Friday's Trivia Question: What is the wingman line Barney uses to introduce 2 people to each other?
