THE SHOWS

Parks & Recreation
Leslie and the Parks Department planning the prom was a bit of a stretch even for Pawnee, but who cares. I love a good prom. Did you see the  prom to-do list in the background during the prom planning meeting? Mostly normal stuff but did you notice that they needed D'Who's?  Dads Who Help Out. good acronym.  You knew that once Leslie saw Allison's binder she'd be OBSESSED with her and fast track her for a Summer Internship that would one day result in Allison taking over for Leslie, but not if Ron Swanson had something say. Ron apparently has a 10 point Leslie intervention scale (and what appeared to be the largest, oldest cell phone ever) and her reaction to Allison was apparently an 8, so Ron had to step in and do what he does best. Provide Leslie with the guidance and advice she can't seem to get from Ben. Ben was too busy with Tom DJ'ing the prom. Who knew that it would be Ben with the killer playlist. Huskerdoo? Awesome! What was with the ill-fitting trench coat though?  Andy went the traditional route. Drinking in the limo, the tux with the aqua cummerbund and bow tie and pictures with a limping dog wearing a toupee as a stand in for April's Dad. There were glittery jackets, prom dresses, helium balloons, and net/net a good time was had by all, even April who hates proms.  Had to admit, I had to look up who Elana Kagan was, 10 points if you know without looking it up too. Favorite line of the episode was Ben's when talking about DJ'ing: "I hope that the high school gymnasiums' big enough cause I'm bringing 10,000 Maniacs"

Hollywood Game Night
What was up with Bob Harper and that gold tooth? Ewww! Donald Faison was amazing on Hollywood Game Night, can't believe his team didn't win and he wasn't picked for the bonus round. TV ID is one of the games that Donald was crazy good at. It's like name that tune but for TV shows. See if you could guess the TV shows by the clues given:

Clue: VAMPIRE- Answer:?
Clue: BEACH DUDES-Answer?
Clue: BEER-Answer?
Clue: PRESIDENT-Answer?
Clue: ALIEN BUREAU-Answer?
Clue: SCARY FISH-Answer?
Clue: POTHEADS-Answer?

Tough right?  I can't give you points because many of you probably saw the show. Answers are True Blood, Hawaii Five-O, Cheers, Scandal, X-Files, Shark Tank and Beavis and Butthead for those of you who didn't watch.

Scandal
Abby's attempt at filling in for Olivia at the White House wasn't bad. I guess she too has a white coat. Maybe you get one from Olivia once you take the official Gladiator oath. (Does that mean Quinn still has hers-think so) Loved Mellie in her bra and rollers. Good look. Loved the ultimatum that Olivia gave Andrew and her thing with Fitz, but I gotta admit, I really enjoyed both scenes with Jake and Olivia best. The one with the sheets between them and the one with the door between them. I assumed that Jake would catch Olivia in the act, but I guess it's just that simple. To take down B613, sleep with Command. I really thought it wouldn't be that easy and would go on forever like when SD-6 was trying to take down the Alliance on what show? Scary Jake came back at the end. I didn't love that and now there are only 2 eps left til the end of the season. Damn you Kerry Washington. We could have had a few more weeks of Scandal if it wasn't for that baby!

Parenthood
Ahhhh finally, Julia's BACK! Hair's brushed, ring is off, skirts are back on and she's cutting through red tape and kicking some Board of Education butt. The Charter School is a GO! So is Ashes of Rome's album and a tour with 4D. (3 more than 1D!) Loved seeing Julia with Evan at the release party, of course next week Joel shows up. What do you think Joel or Evan? I like Evan and I like him more than Ed. Hank's working through stuff with Dr. Pelican and trying to get Sarah back. Drew should probably check in with his Mom more often. How in the world does she not know he's been living with Amber for a month and out of the dorm she's paying big bucks for?  Zeke found a place for him and Camille and it looks perfect. Do we think they'll actually move? Has NBC decided anything yet? One more season please!

THE OTHER STUFF

Not much news to report today…just the big obvious story…

-I don't know why I was so shocked by David Letterman's announcement, but I was. I totally get it though. He's 66 years old, the time periods more competitive and crowded than ever before and I just don't see Dave posting videos to YouTube and Tweeting about anything.  I have to be honest, I've never really watched Letterman. I wasn't really a late night person until recently  (I still don't consider myself one since I watch in the morning or online.) and you know who my guy is. Dave's not exactly sure when his last day will be. Sometime in 2015 so another year to say celebrate the guy and put together all sorts of tributes and retrospectives together that will now get people to tune in.  Of course there's already speculation on who will take over at 1135pm on CBS. Any suggestions?

Friday's Trivia Question: I've been asked for a Final Four/NCAA/March Madness question and since I know NOTHING about this topic, I'll have to thank my friend Bob Kaplan for this one. If you don't like it, or it's too hard, blame him. Kentucky is starting 5 Freshman. What was the last team to do this in an NCAA Tournament Game?

I sort of feel bad…that question is pretty niche…how about a Friends Trivia Question to end the week? The chicken and the duck got stuck in Chandler and Joey's apartment. Where were they stuck?

Have a great weekend!

Goodbye Chris Trager and Ann Perkins...hope it's not forever

THE ANSWER TO THURSDAY'S TRIVIA QUESTION:  The coldest outdoor Superbowl, prior to Sunday, took place in New Orleans where the temperature was 39 degrees. I'm hoping we don't shatter that record this week.

THE SHOWS

Comedians in Cars Getting Coffee
When the only interesting things about Tina Fey are that she doesn't drive, doesn't have keys to her own apartment and is completely in charge of all feces in her home, normally you'd think the episode would suck. Not when Jerry's driving. Cool car, cool scenery, funny observations, cereal puff milkshakes and a hilarious product placement  were enough to save this weeks installment of CiCGC. I really thought Tina would be funnier, more interesting and less "opaque".  I wonder if Jerry thought that too.  Last week Todd Barry made Jerry work, but this week I think he had to work a bit harder. In one scene it seemed like there might have even been some awkward silence.  See what you think. I'd still watch the episode, just to appreciate how good Jerry is at pulling it all together.

Parks and Recreation
This was it...Ann Perkins and Chris Trager said goodbye to Pawnee forever. Of course Leslie threw the best farewell party for Ann Perkins, because that's what Leslie Knope does. A years worth of holidays and birthdays all in one party. Great idea if anyones got an unlimited budget and a great party planner. Doesn't Rashida Jones look way too good pregnant? I guess fake pregnancy's the way to go. No swelling, no stretchmarks and no baby. Leslie made a crazy amount of scrapbooks to send Ann on her way with. 25 points if you know how many. Chris Trager was channelling his inner Elaine Benis and dancing to a great tune at the party. Another 25 points if you can name the song. Chris had crazy thoughtful parting gifts for the guys who had only a gift card to a Pot & Pan store for him. Didn't matter though, heartfelt goodbyes were handed out across the board to everyone. I thought once the tears started that I'd cry too, but not one tear from me. Not sure why. I guess I'm assuming and hoping that Chris and Ann bring their baby back to meet the gang one of these days. I'll liTrally (I know it's spelled wrong, but that's how Chris says it) miss Rob and Rashida each and every week, but life in Pawnee does go on.

SNL Sports Spectacular
Lorne and the SNL gang are apparently in Superbowl spirit mode. They went back to the archives and pulled a lot of great clips featuring sports stars together to celebrate the big game. I'd seen most of the skits before. Some were worth watching again, like the Tim Tebow/Jesus/Bears skit or the Maya Rudolph National Anthem one, but there were a few I had never seen before. I don't remember why, but I had never seen the Peyton Manning episode and his skits WERE super funny. Also a realllly old one featuring a very young Ray Romano and Tim Meadows doing Sportcenter.   Loved David Spade as Scott Hamilton and forgot how hilarious Chris Farley was with Nancy Kerrigan. Really great compilation actually.

Vampire Diaries
You'd think that being immortal would be relatively easy, but there seems to be all these downsides to being a vampire. I mean, sure, you can't get in to every party unless the host is conveniently located near the door, and sure you have to kill people if you don't have access to a blood bank. Oh and there's that vervane thing, werewolves, certain wood spears, hybrids, vampire hunters and witches to contend with. Once you have all that handled and have mastered the vampire life there's now a new curve ball...travellers. Can we EVER just have a party in Mystic Falls where the guys take their shirts off and make out with the girls? Soooo much drama! I thought I was in the clear with all the doppelgangers out of the picture...not when Julie Plec has her way. We're still dealing with this Katherine/Elena madness. I for one, don't like it. One other thing, how do all these fireplaces and candles get lit all the time without someone scrambling for matches or wood or anything. Is it all magic even when there aren't witches around. Vampires can't light things up on their own can they? Net/Net Katherine's in Elena's body, and this guy Enzo's back to get Damon back into killer mode and Tyler's pissed that Caroline slept with Klaus. Of course the shows good, but sometimes I'd just like to go old school.

Nashville
Now FINALLY, Scarlett's getting interesting. I was sort of hoping that Liam would lay down more than just her vocal tracks, but maybe that'll come in time. Must be fun when two superstars date. Luke got Rayna on a Nascar CAR, into the garage and onto the track to help promote her new album. That's the kind of thing I just can't make happen for my car loving husband. What I can do though, is take a page from the Juliette Barnes cookbook...pasta and ketchup! I actually used to LOVE that when I was little. Funny that's the dinner that she finally seduced Avery with. Sam Boone was supposed to be Sam Walton from Walmart right? Nice little statement made there about how artists are treated in those stores huh? Loved that Layla is basically a body filled with nothing. No thoughts of her own, nothing to put down on paper at all. In a town where making music seems so easy, must be a real bummer when you can't write a song at all. Coupla good cameos, Brad Paisley and Austin Dillon. I guess now that Kim's home again, Brad can repay the favor to the producers for giving his wife a job for a while.

THE OTHER STUFF

Everyone keeps talking about this Seinfeld reunion. Hoping it's just a Superbowl commercial or Jerry's getting a limo and throwing the entire cast into it for an Comedians in Cars Getting Coffee "very special episode".

I'm not doing Black Sails on Starz. I think I mentioned that pirates aren't my thing, but if you're feeling the need to binge the show. No worries, Starz will be running a on March 15th that will end with the season finale. I'll remind you again in March.

Puppy Bowl, Kitten Bowl or Fish Bowl? Which one you watching?

Top Chef fans, good news, 12th season's a go.

Banshee fans, also good news, season 3's a go.

Friday's Trivia Question: This question came in from Bob Kaplan over at CBS. I loved it so much that I pre-empted James's other questions. Thanks Bob! Prior to 2014, name the last 5 Super Bowl Halftime performers.

Have a great weekend, enjoy the game and the commercials!

THE SHOWS

Parenthood
Don't you think that Eric and Tami Taylor should be best friends with Adam and Kristina Braverman? If the four of them got together they could take over the world. I only wish that The Taylors had a son instead of daughters, that way their son could marry Hattie and make a super couple. It would be crazy.  Of COURSE Kristina is going to start a school. It makes perfect sense and she's totally going to do it. I know it. Joel and Julia breaking up is tough, but gotta admit, I didn't shed a tear, until Julia went home to tell her parents. The scene where they told the kids wasn't that great and doesn't only take 10 seconds. I get that it's TV and we only have 42 minutes, but it wasn't as real as the rest of the show. They should have given it more time. Every scene with Max and Hank has now become so interesting hasn't it? They're both helping each other because they're both different versions of the same person. So well done. Also well done, was Zeek's realization of how much he needs his wife and what he needs to do to make her happy. Of course the second they decide to put the house up for sale is the second that Crosby and Jasmine need to move in and the second Julia shows up needing to "come home". I'm betting the house actually does get packed up and sold. Can you imagine the "very special episode" memories that will be found in the attic? Damn this show is good and now it's gone until 2/27. I miss the Braverman's when I don't see them every week at least will have the Olympics.

Parks & Rec
Now that Amy's back from the Golden Globes we got a great, classic Parks & Rec episode. The Whine and Cheese club alone was worth the past few episodes of mediocrity. I could watch Ron not listening to his co-workers vent about work over fine wines and cheeses 24/7. His discovery of the Ipod and how incredible it is was...hilarious. My realization that the not only did the  Whine and Cheese club read Men Are From Mars, Women Are From Venus but they understood it enough to recommend it's methodology to Chris for helping Ann through her pregnancy. Brilliant and hilarious. Also hilarious, the entire Swiss Chard storyline and the conversation of how gross Chard is.  "Chard is celery with B.O." Chard tastes like kale took a dump on spinach. OMG it SO DOES! How funny were Andy's kids songs. Here are a few that didn't make the episode http://www.nbc.com/parks-and-recreation/video/deleted-scene-andys-kids-songs/n45462/ You know he's going to make millions on booger and fart songs, t-shirts and toys now that he's found his true calling. I knew it was just a temporary Golden Globes lapse in focus...they're back.

Vampire Diaries
There's always some way to solve all of the crazy supernatural problems in Mystic Falls. Katherine's dying for weeks now...weeks. The gang couldn't be happier to see her go. Well maybe not Stefan, but everyone else was toasting her demise and counting down til her last breath and then...of course, Nadia figured out how to keep her around. Of course she's not dead. We always need the villain around don't we? Once Klaus and Rebecca left town and spun off and all the other demons, vampire hunters etc. were gone, we needed someone to hate and of course now all's right in the world. Katherine lives IN Elena with crazy black scary eyes. What thats going to do to Damon's sex life is a mystery at this point, but I'm guessing that the second he experiences this crazy pseudo threesome he's going to know that something IS UP! Crazy good times with Klaus and Caroline in the woods right?  Poor Matt, locked in a safe until Rebecca broke him out for a visit. One complaint...Jeremy Gilbert is hot, why don't they let him just be hot. Why give him the ugly hair again? Julie Plec...notes for all shoots...make sure all hot guys always look hot!

Nashville
So many big stars are jumping on the Nashville bandwagon. This week it was Zac Brown and his knit cap and Jay DeMarcus from Rascal Flatts. Zac had Scarlett on stage to sing "Free" with the band and Jay bumped in to Gunnar, got a hotel room and wrote a song. Is it me or is song writing made out to be really easy? Singers just say to their friends, "Hey, wanna write a song today?" and they just write a song. It was like that in the Carole King play too. Go to work, write a song and go home. Scarlett and Gunnar wrote a hit song in a day, Rayna and Deacon too. When Rayna and Deacon were writing though, there was that chemistry, it's undeniable and you could see that they know it. They're so scared of it that they both decided they can't ever do it again. Rayna's going to go be a couple with Luke and Deacon's going to go his own way and sign a crappy record deal. Juliette's fans still hate her for not believing in God even though she does. Since all her fans blew her off, she put on a wig and some glasses and went out with Avery into the street to literally "sing for their supper." Of course crowds gathered around and didn't recognize her like Hannah Montana, and Avery said all the right things that SHOULD get him some action, but I think that'll happen next week. Ultra, Ultra mean Jeff, told Juliette she's white trash garbage and has to go beg her fans forgiveness, I'm betting that'll never happen. Juliette's a lot of things, but she's no beggar.

Comedians in Cars Getting Coffee
http://ccc.crackle.com/#cmpid=3651
SPOILER ALERT: If you haven't seen Captain Phillips or Gravity yet, don't watch this weeks episode of CiCGC.
Jerry has truly mastered monetizing the art of doing nothing. I wish I had discovered that this was something masterable and done it years ago. Damn that's a talent all it's own. I've never seen Todd Barry before, I've never heard of Todd Barry before and after this episode I probably never will again, but because of Todd's lackluster personality, Jerry shines. This was a Jerry episode more than anything else. I never EVER thought of Jerry as a guy that would wear a NYC scarf knot, but apparently he does and he sort of pulled it off. This was more shocking to me than this weeks sneaker choice. Still worth watching.

THE OTHER STUFF

-Patrick Dempsey and Ellen Pompeo will be back for 2 more seasons of Grey's Anatomy. More Derek, more whiney Meredith I can't believe she hasn't been killed off yet. I couldn't stand her so much, I gave up the show.

-HBO cancelled Family Tree and Hello Ladies, after just one season and is most likely renewing Getting On. I'm not one to pat myself on the back, but I was right on the money with all 3 of these shows so the networks really should just ask ME! The two shows they are cancelling both star Eurpoean actors and are both shows I just didn't get and didn't think were funny. See a theme here?

-TiVo put out a great report about social media and multitasking yesterday. Here's what I learned:
  • Despite all the multitasking, most people actually actively watch TV when it's on
  • 76% of respondents said that their primary focus when the TV is on is...the TV
  • 45% of TiVo users and 35% of non-TiVo users said their attention was directed ONLY towards TV and nothing else.
  • Among the multitaskers, 61% are using smartphones and 6% are using a portable gaming device. What like a Game Boy? Mattel Football? What are they using?
  • Only 27% of respondents report using the Internet to find content related to their fave shows. Most online activity occurs AFTER watching with 14% doing it immediately after and 32% sometime during the following week
  • Shockingly most respondents are NOT using the Internet to connect with others to discuss TV shows. 61% of TiVo users and 55% of Non-TiVO users said they only want to discuss TV with people they know and not strangers.
  • Most respondents notice, but aren't interested in hashtags during shows
  • 25% of viewers said they avoid the Internet until they watch certain episodes to ensure missing spoilers
  • 73% of respondents report that some shows are so tricky to follow that they have to focus completely like Game of Thrones. NO DISTRACTIONS

Park & Rec
What's better than one episode of Parks & Rec? Two episodes of Parks & Rec. The first episode started out with a Play 60/NFL integration that didn't have much to do with the rest of the episode. I guess it was cool that the cast got back on the Colts field and hung out with the team, but in general, it was what it was, a product integration.
I absolutely HATE that Leslie Knope was booted out of office.I hate that Ann Perkins and Chris are moving to Michigan and I have a love/hate relationship these days with Councilman Jamm. All he's done, and all he'll ever do is make Leslie's life miserable. For that, I hate him. However, his hypnotic hair, Benihana cook top, obsession with Michelle Wie and female wrestlers and his "My Mouth Got Jammed" T-Shirts all make watching him so enjoyable, especially the hypnotic hair. I can't take my eyes off it.  A million other things happened in both episodes last night. Ron and Chris built cribs. Ron sold his cabin to April for an asthma inhaler, a gum wrapper and a 50 cents. There was Barks & Recreation, where everyone found their spirit dog. Fun for everyone. Ben got fired from Sweetums, hired at the accounting firm, quit and will now be the new city manager once Chris leaves making him his wife's boss. Pretty sure the town voted for fluoride in the water but now it's called TDazzle or H2Flow or something.  There was so much bamboozling I'd have to go back and rewatch the entire episode to see where we netted out water wise. Best part of both episodes: Leslie and Jamm singing "Summer Nights" from Grease. Jamm took the Sandy part, check it out: http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2013/11/21/parks-and-rec-summer-nights_n_4316001.html

Glee
It was MY FAVORITE, Billy Joel week!!! The cast did a great job, but you can't really screw up Billy Joel, although I did walk out of "Movin Out" on Broadway, that did suck, but I digress. I don't know how many bedrooms there are in that loft, but right now, Kurt, Rachel and Santana are living in it together. You know that if Blaine gets in to NYADA and Sam becomes a male model, the Fab 5 will be living all together under one roof. Well, at least if they all split the rent they may be able to stop ordering in and go out for dinner once in a while. Back in Lima, Artie was helping Becky check out a college so she could stop being Sue's Becretary and learn to live on her own. Of course Sue freaked but she eventually came around. Who'd have thought that the one person to go out on their own would be Becky? Marlie's still heartbroken about Jake cheating on her even though Ryder is WAY too in to her. Ryder annoys me, so I hope Marlie doesn't come around and goes right back to Jake. Who was the big time supermodel making a guest appearance as the HOUSE OF BITCHETTE agent? 5 bonus points if you know who it was. She thought Sam had potential and especially enjoyed his trouty mouth. I especially enjoyed his nearly naked photo shoot. What's with Rachel's eyebrows? Super thick right? Loved Santana getting annoyed that every big decision argument or conversation in the loft (or anyplace else for that matter), has to end with a song. Of course she couldn't stay away when they all sang "Just the Way You Are" to Sam because that's the cure for everything on Glee. SING! Other songs were: "Movin Out," "Piano Man," "My Life," "Honesty," "Innocent Man," and "You May Be Right."  Sort of hoped for a version of "Vienna," but you can't have everything.

Scandal
2 worst words ever...WINTER FINALE. Not only does that totally suck, but now I have to wait 2 weeks for the big cliffhanger just to start waiting AGAIN! To be honest, I didn't care much at all about the Lisa Kudrow and her sister/daughter storyline. Okay Harrison finally got a little something, but glad that arc is over. So let me get this straight, Olivia's Mom's been locked away in a cell for 20 years with no light, no phones and no TV, but she can kill her doctor, escape AND find her daughter in 10 seconds after eating her veins until they bled?  I love you Shonda, I do, but COME ON!!!! Didn't you freak out when Olivia smashed the Fitzphone? How's he going to get in touch with her? How will they make up? Jake told us he'd find a way and he did. Helicopter to Vermont to reveal the sickest cabin built just for her. That did it. Back in sync, back on track, back together but apart, you know what I mean. Mellie knew the deal as soon as she couldn't reach either one of them. She just knew. Cyrus...O.M.G. I think James got him. Of course we don't believe that James cheated with Steven Carrington. I'm assuming that he turned the tables on Cyrus. One of those be careful what you wish for scenarios right? I hope so because as Cyrus told Mellie, "My husband's not like your husband." I agree. James is one of the good ones. You knew it was only a matter of time before Huck found out about Quinn. TWO WEEKS we have to wait. 5 bonus points for each of the songs from last nights episode.

Parenthood
Of course last nights episode of Parenthood was written by Jason Katims...
Cried watching Victor go to school
Cried watching Julia fall apart
Cried when Hank was talking to Max about girls
Cried when Kristina lost the election and went to the ugly cry when Emma thanked her in sign language
Cried the most when Kristina's friend in the wheelchair showed up to vote.

Needed a Xanax for every scene with Julia and Joel
Needed a Xanax for every scene with Amber and Ryan
Needed another Xanax after the fight scene
Needed a Xanax for anything relating to Drew and Natalie...been there done that big time!
For the record, I didn't take any Xanax.

I knew Crosby didn't vote...he's SO that guy!
Tenafly has computerized voting booths and Berkley doesn't?
Max and Ruby...did you catch that?

NEWS & INFORMATION:

-A great December roster of hosts and musical guests for SNL in December. 12/7, Paul Rudd and my current favorite boy band, One Direction. 12/14, John Goodman and Kings of Leon and on 12/21, NBC's giving me a late Hanukkah/early Christmas present. My FBFF, Jimmy Fallon and his BFF Justin Timberlake together! Can you imagine how insane that episode could be? OMG can't wait!!!

-FOX made some mid-season programming and scheduling announcements yesterday. I loaded the premieres into my chart for you all. Good news for me, Glee moves from Thursday to Tuesday. Dads wasn't on the schedule, not sure what that actually means yet. No official word from FOX that it's been cancelled. Also not on the schedule anywhere, The Mindy Project. Mysterious moves, but let's wait and see what happens.

-This is hilarious. If I had enough connections and enough money to pull awesome pranks on my neighbors, I'd do this too! Check out Jimmy Kimmel's holiday prank: http://www.thewrap.com/jimmy-kimmel-john-krasinski-emily-blunt-christmas-prank

-Sosie Bacon was named Miss Golden Globe 2014. She's Kevin and Kyra's daughter. If Kevin Bacon and Kyra Sedgwick had a daughter she would look like this: http://www.people.com/people/article/0,,20759142,00.html

Friday's Trivia Question: Dr. Turk, Dr. Cox, Dr. Kelso, Dr Dorian, Dr. Reid and The Janitor. Name the show.

Reminder, to send in your daily media consumption for my unofficial study.  Thanks!

Have a great weekend!
