THE SHOWS

The Goldbergs Season Finale
Had to watch it last night since I was out on Tuesday night. Of course I enjoyed it, but I had a feeling that it wasn't supposed to be the finale. Something didn't feel finaleish to me. Anyway, there was Fantasy Island on TV, Tattoo in all his glory. (give me his famous phrase for bonus points) Then there was the Garfield phone my sister had in Barry's room. I love those little 80's throwbacks. We found out a lot about Murray. He was in the Army, he was in a plane crash, he waited tables with Lou Reed AND he set his high schools record for consecutive free throws. All of which his family and I would have never guessed. While he and Bev were out accepting an award, Barry was attempting to throw a rager. Unfortunately nobody showed so Erica hooked him up big time and called her friend who called two friends and so on and so on. Who needed Twitter? The party got out of control and turned in to a Bev Sweater fiesta, Lainee made out with Barry in front of his crush, Lexie Bloom and even Murray let him have his moment with a final song. Name the 80's anthem that ended the season. Thanks Adam Goldberg…great rookie year.

Glee Season Finale (THANK GOD)
Thank God Mercedes and Sam broke up. Thank God Blaine and Shirley came to an understanding, thank god this season is OVER. I was DONE. Good song selection this week. John Legend's "All of Me," Duran Duran's "Girls on Film," and Bastille's "Pompeii got me through it. Annoyed that it's Rachel going to Hollywood and not Blaine or Kurt. Would have been cool if it was Ryan Seacrest giving her the news but Glee's not cool anymore. Annoyed that Sam went back to Lima and annoyed that Brittany's back. So glad this show doesn't come back for a year. I'll need that much time to decide whether to watch or not.

Survivor
Say what you will about Survivor but 27 seasons and it's still awesome. Last night was CRAYZEEEEE. I wanted to scream when Tony won the pizza reward challenge but then I wanted to vomit when I had to watch him and Trish eat it all. I can't stand Kass and I can't stand Tony and honestly, I couldn't stand Trish. I couldn't have been happier when Spencer won immunity. Kass and Trish got into it and Woo woke up. Didn't you think that Trish's crazy neck veins would burst during their brawl? Ewww those things are nasty. So here's what I didn't get. Why didn't Tony give the regular Idol to Trish and keep the other Idol for himself? On her way out, Kass gave Trish the finger. Can't wait til the reunion! Hope Kass kicks the sh*t out of Trish. Jeff Probst, Mark Burnett thumbs UP!!!

Suburgatory Series Finale
For some reason I thought last week was the season finale but this week was and with the news that the show isn't being picked up next season, it became the series finale as well. Glad that Tessa and Ryan ended up ripping each others clothes off in the middle of the street but I really wanted Dallas and George together at the end, especially after that song he sang. They didn't.

Modern Family Season Finale Part 1 (Which means it's really NOT the Season Finale right?)
Did anyone laugh at all last night? I don't think I laughed once. Well, I sort of chuckled at the use of the word "jinkies" but other than that nada. I couldn't get past the idea that anyone in L.A. or anywhere else, would ever move their wedding up 4 hours. In L.A. with traffic on the 405 or the 101 you'd never make it on time. Plus what about all the hair and make-up appointments. I mean that would NEVER happen. Lily in the dry cleaners, Luke and Claire in the boat, Jay and Merle in the steam room and Andy and Hailey in the car ehhhhh. It was sorta funny when Phil pretended to be blind but nothing close to laughter came out of mouth. Part 2 next week not looking so good. Let's hope I'm wrong, let's hope the writers have a long Summer break and come back refreshed and back on the funny track.

Nashville Season Finale
Now that's a finale. That's how you do it! How cool is Rayna James? She screwed over the evil Jeff Fordham, saved Juliette, was proposed to in front of everyone and given a 7 carat diamond and THEN had Deacon say it and do it even better with a simple platinum band (I'm going with platinum).  Finally, Will came clean to Lila, but little does he know that there is a camera in the bathroom even though the deal was no camera's in the bedroom or the bathroom. Nice cameo by Jess Cagle…anyone know who he is? 10 bonus points if you do. Glad Avery and Juliette are sort of working things out and maybe, just maybe Scarlett will stay in Nashville. Come on that duet was too good for her to walk away from.

THE OTHER STUFF

I didn't go to the CBS Upfront because I was still recovering from the ABC Upfront if you know what I mean. I did stream most of it though and here are my thoughts:

  • Overall…I felt a little bit like CBS had eaten a piece of humble pie. Not as many #1 proclamations as past Upfronts not from Nancy and not from Les. Sort of refreshing.
  • As a Good Wife fan, it was fun to see Alicia, Cary and Diane say Cluster F*ck I love when celebs curse.
  • Alan Cummings Cabaret open was interesting. Quite a body. What's with the nipple references this upfront? First Jimmy Kimmel then Alan Cumming then David Letterman. Lets see if Jed talks nipples tomorrow.
  • So if NBC talked Olympics, CBS talked THURSDAY NIGHT FOOTBALL. In case you didn't know, CBS got it and everyone else didn't
  • David Letterman got a standing O, told us about his 2 day phone fight with Les and left us with a joke about a moth and a podiatrist.
  • Then it was time for Nina. She went with orange. Not a speck of white. On my computer her glasses made her look a little Mr. Magoo-ee hoping it was a streaming side affect.
  • Halle Berry was wearing some crazy pants and was there to get us psyched for Extant which launches in July. I don't know…it looks interesting. I might watch it.
  • YEAH BIG BROTHER!
  • 3 NCIS's, 2 CSI's and 2 out of 5 New Kids on the Block! Yep CBS got Joey McIntyre in a comedy called The McCarthy's
  • Dylan McDermott got another gig…this ones way too scary for me. It's called Stalker
  • Madam Secretary looked good. I love anything White House-ish and Tea Leoni stars in this one as the new Secretary of State. Of course guess when it's on…SUNDAY nights! At least it's on at 8pm and not at 9pm.
  • Out of respect and admiration for Vince Gilligan,  I will check out Battle Creek.
  • Scorpion reminds me of Numbers a little bit. Glad to see Katherine McPhee got some bangs and another show
  • Last season of 2 1/2 Men
  • Surprised that after ALL THAT PUBLICITY…no How I Met Your Dad, but Nina Tassler said the pilot just wasn't good and that Carter and Craig didn't want to re-pilot. Lets see if it ends up elsewhere.
  • No big finale this year. Guess you can't get The Who if you're not number 1 at something.

-FX's Legit and Chozen (the other Chozen, not the one on Crackle that you guys NEED to watch) have both been cancelled.

-Conan's locked into TBS through 2018. I guess there's zero pressure on him to deliver a number.

-Harry Connick's already agreed to another season of Idol. I would too. Less hours=Less work and I'm betting the pays still pretty decent.

Thursday's Trivia Question: Dylan McDermott was at CBS's Upfront last year for a different show than he was at this years upfront for. Name last years show.

Survivor
WTF was that? Were you as confused by tribal council as I was? Forget Sarah's dirty pink bra, Trish's super annoying beachfront yoga class and Woo's skeletoes.  Were LJ and Tony ever even in play? Not that I saw. Why on earth would they not only play the idols, but play them for each other when they weren't even on the chopping block? I'm fine with Sarah being voted out don't get me wrong.  She let the power go to her head super fast which is bad game play, she should have known better. I just didn't get the entire tribal council thing and I watched it all twice!

Suburgatory
Well, now we know about Dallas's southern huge-haired family and that very strange sound she makes when she's stressing. To help her out, Tessa got permission from George to miss school and jumped into a 78 Trans-Am we never knew Dallas owned and headed down somewhere very southern for her Mom's funeral. That family was a crazy piece of work and while we didn't actually meet Mom, we did find out she was a total b*tch. Dallas gave Tessa a southern makeover which was hilarious. Note to Jeremy Sisto: You don't need the botox. Please stop. You have great hair, a great face, a great body, who cares if you have some lines in the forehead? George, Fred and Noah went on a group date but only Fred was somewhat successful and of course he was just in wingman mode. Glad Noah's back though. Note to ABC, the cookie chick simulating what she was simulating was a little awkward for a Mom and her 12 year old during the 8:30pm hour, but we got through it. Could have used some of Tessa's Mallomars, but we got through it all snack free.

Modern Family
I wish last nights episode of Modern Family ran on Tuesday night instead of Wednesday, it would have been better for April Fools Day. Cam got me, I'm assuming he got all of you guys too right? I was completely convinced that he really loved and was touched by the soap carving cake topper that his Dad created with old, arthritic hands proving that he truly loves his son. Of course Mitch hated the cake topper and did everything possible to get rid of it. Mitch had already used his 3 wedding vetoes (I need to keep that veto thing in mind for future compromises and negotiations) so there was no way the cake topper was leaving. What we didn't know was that Cam intentionally served up the cake topper just to get Mitch to agree to another veto and then vetoed the wedding band who wasn't being cooperative. Damn that was a good plan. I really couldn't believe that after 5 years Gloria's ex-employer would let her just come in and cut hair AND let Phil help shampoo strangers, but that IS what happened and it was all sort of stupid as was the entire Manny/Luke storyline from the episode.

Flipping Out
If I were Jenni, I would have never allowed myself to be filmed anywhere near Mark Paul Gossalear's wife Cat. Both women were pregnant but Jenni must have gained 50 pounds and Cat gained 8. Hate women like that. Thank god Jenni had a girl and went with Aliana and not Tassos Nassos. That would have just been cruel but I think they were serious. They sure had way too many people in that delivery room if you ask me. In addition to the doctors and nurses, I counted 4 other people. Jenni's Mom, Sister, BFF and husband. Really? Whether Zoila's "B*tch" bling was real or not didn't matter it was hilarious because everything Zoila does or says is hilarious and again, not enough Zoila this week. Lisa G and her husband were back complaining about money. If they are going to torture Jeff, why did they hire him back? TV?

Nashville
Of course Maddie's video leaked out and now has 1,000,000 views. Now everyone knows that Deacon's her Dad. Good for Rayna, Deacon and Teddy for going on GMA and setting the record straight with the truth. Wish more celebrities and politicians would take that route. What I didn't realize was that it was Luke who leaked the video. I knew he was too good to be true. They always are. Is it me or is Hayden Panatierre's hair looking ultra artificial lately? If it only takes Gunnar a few minutes to write a song and he gets a royalty check for 400K wouldn't he just write more songs? That's all I do. Sit and write and ka-chiiiiing! I like Juliette and Avery a lot, but I sort of like that Charlie Wentworth guy. Scarlett's evil, horrible Mom's in town and that was enough to throw Scarlett over the edge. Too bad she lost it on Juliette's stage. More trouble for Rayna and that label of hers now.

THE OTHER STUFF

-All we need, another set top box. There are so many now that it would make my head explode if I actually wanted or needed one, but Amazon released their Amazon Fire version. With it you can watch Netflix, Amazon Prime, Hulu, Watch ESPN, Showtime Anytime, Crackle, Bloomberg TV, Pandora, Vevo and I Heart Radio. I'm sure more content distributors will join soon. Anyway, the tiny box is only $99 bucks. So if you don't have a smart TV or a Chromocast or any of the other options, this one might be for you.

-The Peabody Awards are the oldest honors in broadcasting. They recognize and celebrate excellence in storytelling. Winners were announced yesterday. The ones I care about are:
Breaking Bad, Orange is the New Black, Scandal, The Returned, House of Cards, Orphan Black, The Bridge, Broadchurch, A Chefs Life & Anthony Bourdain: Parts Unknown. Obviously my recommendations can be trusted since the first 6 programs are currently on my binge list.  Ahhhh validation, it's a great feeling.

-Not sure what's going on with ABC's Astronaut Wives Club but it's been pulled from it's July launch and pushed back to midseason 14-15. Not good news for that cast.

Thursday's Trivia Question: I had to look it up…I confess. See if you can answer this one without looking it up though. Will Wheaton is getting his own Talk Soup for Geeks show over on Syfy. He plays himself on The Big Bang Theory, but what was his characters name on Star Trek the Next Generation?

THE SHOWS

The Tonight Show with Jay Leno
I've probably watched Jay 5 or 10 times over his 22 year run but of course I had to watch the last show. Mainly because I love Garth Brooks, but also because I just wanted to see it for myself. It was sweet and cheesy which is what I sort of expected. Billy Crystal was sweet and cheesy as was the "So Long, Farewell" bit, but I'll admit, I got choked up when Jay got choked up. Nice to see him get a bit emotional. While his comments about the Tonight Show crew being his family were also very sweet, if I were Mavis, I think I might be a bit miffed. Jay mentioned that after he lost his Mom, Dad and bro he "was pretty much out of family and the folks at the Tonight Show became his family." Ahhh what about MAVIS, Jay???  No thank you to good ole Mavis? She's the one who's gotta deal with you now Jay, I personally would have set that stage a bit better. Either way, it's always sad to say good-bye even if it's to someone I rarely said hello to.

Winter Olympics (I'm going with bullets)
  • Bob's got a pink eye or something, but he's a trooper and got comfy at his super cool diamond desk.
  • You can live stream without knowing the results...WAY COOL NBC!!!
  • The NBC Olympic App is WAY cool and you can watch all day! There's also a Visa camera app too that you have to check out
  • Slope Style Snowboarding is crazy. My heart stops when they're in the air so long.
  • Just to be clear that is NOT Jenny Jones the former talk show host flying down the mountain.
  • Love seeing the replay of a great wipeout from every angle and in slow motion.
  • Jamie Anderson, US Slope Style boarder currently in first place, has 7 brothers and sisters and was raised in Lake Tahoe. Had to be a fun way to grow up. She's a real tree hugger. She hugs a tree before she heads down the mountain. I'm totally serious. She really does.
  • Love all the Russian Babushka Dolls everywhere
  • Putin/Politics-Candy Crush time
  • Mens Short Program -Team
  • Yevgeny Plushenko's considered a rock star in Russia. Not the most attractive guy in the world. He probably should have shaved before he took to the ice. Some big bling for a skater, I would think that would be dangerous.
  • Loving the Quads
  • Jeremy Abbott CRASHED AND BURNED BIG TIME
  • Patrick Chan wasn't that great either. It's the Olympics people...A Game!
  • Yuzuro Hanyu from Japan brought his A Game big time. Kicked Plushenko down a notch. Only 19 years old and he sort of looked rubbery.
  • Ya gotta love Scott Hamilton he gets super excited over everything
  • Bode Miller's 36 years old and still skiing
  • Shaun White dropped out of the Men's Slope Style. Lots of controversy
  • SebToots pretty good...I like the nickname
  • Okay so the Japanese pairs team TRAINS in America but they are skating for Japan. Not sure how I feel about that.
  • Just to clarify...it's not TRIPLE SOW COW...it's TRIPLE SALCHOW
  • Pairs Team Skate
  • There is a 16" difference between Castelli and Shnapir. The did okay but I loved that they skated to Santana
  • Canadians Megan and Eric kicked butt with their routine. Eric composed the music they skated to. Impressive.
  • The Russian dude was channeling a Brian Boitano look and I believe he was sporting a bit of a mullet, hate to say it but they were great. Still preferred the Canadians
  • Back to the snowboarding. Mark McMorris competed with a broken rib and crashed. That HAD to hurt.
  • 1620 is 5 rotations people!
  • Didn't the snow on the womens mogul mountain look like white sand? it was odd looking to me
  • Hannah Kearney's braids are ridiculous
The Vampire Diaries
I really do want Elena back and I want her back with Damon. I can't stand this Katherine traveler thing and I hate the ultra mean killing machine Damon Salvatore. I'm thinking that the jig will be up soon since Tyler heard Natalia compelling Matt. How could Matt NOT notice that his vervane necklace was missing? Wouldn't that be like underwear in Mystic Falls? I was thinking, who cleans the Salvatore's house? There's always such destruction and then it's all cleaned up. Is there some compelled cleaning lady around that we don't know about? This weeks awesome party idea: The Bitter Ball where you bring photos of your ex and put it in the shredder. Loved Kathlena's comment: "I didn't think people actually printed out pictures anymore." Not digging this Enzo guy at all. I'd like him to leave soon. Also like Jeremy to get a new hairstylist. What happened to his hottness.

Kelly & Michael
I TiVo Kelly & Michael every day. Every year, Kelly makes a Super Bowl bet. Used to be with Regis and now it's with Michael. Kelly always wins...except for this year. Because she lost, she had to do yesterday's show without make-up and guess who was on the show yesterday? Only GEORGE freaking CLOONEY! Kelly looked okay, not great but okay. What's George going to say? You look beautiful blah, blah, blah. I'm betting that George would NEVER sign Kelly to the two year deal, but it was fun TV anyway. George rules. Super hot, super charming and super funny.

Comedians in Cars Getting Coffee
http://www.comediansincarsgettingcoffee.com/howard-stern-the-last-days-of-howard-stern I'm a HUGE Howard Stern fan and obviously a huge Comedians in Cars Getting Coffee fan. I was totally looking forward to this episode and unfortunately I was a bit disappointed by it. First of all it's the shortest episode this season at only 14 minutes and Howard came across overly neurotic to me. Jerry did a great job with Howard but the shows just off a bit. There's a segment in the supermarket that really made no sense at all. I bet Jerry and Howard rarely if ever go to a supermarket. I did love the car choice though, perfectly fitting for Howard. Watch the episode and tell me if you agree.

Nashville
I don't even know what the truth is anymore on this show. Did Powers Booth kill his wife? Did he try to kill Teddy? He had a story for everything and he was pretty convincing too...until he died. Dun..Dun...DUNNNN Before he bit it, the girls all sang him a beautiful song, made him cookies and welcomed him home, but that's the last time any of them will see him because he had a heart attack in Teddy's office and Teddy did NOTHING to help the guy. I don't even care. Good riddance in my opinion. Will's so afraid of embracing his homosexuality that he got Brent fired from Edgehill, Scarlett's doing great except she's addicted to pills, Deacon and Avery kicked butt at the Bluebird and Juliette seems to have the magical ability to do a complete apartment renovation in less than 6 hours including new furniture, candles, and carpet.  I could use a visit from her at my house. If all that wasn't enough, Zoey did that hair straightening treatment and I barely recognized her.

THE OTHER STUFF

It's Amazon's pilot season again. Last time we all viewed and voted for Alpha's and Betas and both of were made into a series.  There are 5 shows to choose from: The After, Bosch, Mozart in the Jungle, The Rebels, & Transparent.  At press time, I've only seen Mozart in the Jungle and I really liked it. It's about the NYC Orchestra scene and stars Malcom McDowell as the Maestro who's been kicked to the curb for Gael Garcia the hot new innovative conductor. Bernadette Peters is in it but it's all the young unknowns in the cast that are more fun and interesting. I still have 4 others to watch, but pretty impressed with this one.

Anyone who wants to binge view season 1 of FX's The Americans can head on over to Amazon right now. The entire first season is available to stream for all Amazon Prime members. The second season starts on 2/26 so there's plenty of time. I liked this show. I'd say go for it.

On a completely side note, when I'm NOT listening to Howard Stern in the morning, I listen to Scott & Todd on WPLJ. Today is Scott Shannon's last day in the broadcast booth. It caught me by surprise. I had no idea that he was leaving. I used to work for Scott and to be honest he wasn't a nice guy at all. I've heard that over the years he's changed. Regardless of my feelings, he's a good broadcaster and will be missed.

Friday's Trivia Question: No idea why this Olympic moment is stuck in my head but this skier had a crazy Gold Medal winning run in the 1976 Olympics. He wasn't a US athlete. Name him.

Have a great weekend!

THE SHOWS

Comedians in Cars Getting Coffee
When the only interesting things about Tina Fey are that she doesn't drive, doesn't have keys to her own apartment and is completely in charge of all feces in her home, normally you'd think the episode would suck. Not when Jerry's driving. Cool car, cool scenery, funny observations, cereal puff milkshakes and a hilarious product placement  were enough to save this weeks installment of CiCGC. I really thought Tina would be funnier, more interesting and less "opaque".  I wonder if Jerry thought that too.  Last week Todd Barry made Jerry work, but this week I think he had to work a bit harder. In one scene it seemed like there might have even been some awkward silence.  See what you think. I'd still watch the episode, just to appreciate how good Jerry is at pulling it all together.

Parks and Recreation
This was it...Ann Perkins and Chris Trager said goodbye to Pawnee forever. Of course Leslie threw the best farewell party for Ann Perkins, because that's what Leslie Knope does. A years worth of holidays and birthdays all in one party. Great idea if anyones got an unlimited budget and a great party planner. Doesn't Rashida Jones look way too good pregnant? I guess fake pregnancy's the way to go. No swelling, no stretchmarks and no baby. Leslie made a crazy amount of scrapbooks to send Ann on her way with. 25 points if you know how many. Chris Trager was channelling his inner Elaine Benis and dancing to a great tune at the party. Another 25 points if you can name the song. Chris had crazy thoughtful parting gifts for the guys who had only a gift card to a Pot & Pan store for him. Didn't matter though, heartfelt goodbyes were handed out across the board to everyone. I thought once the tears started that I'd cry too, but not one tear from me. Not sure why. I guess I'm assuming and hoping that Chris and Ann bring their baby back to meet the gang one of these days. I'll liTrally (I know it's spelled wrong, but that's how Chris says it) miss Rob and Rashida each and every week, but life in Pawnee does go on.

SNL Sports Spectacular
Lorne and the SNL gang are apparently in Superbowl spirit mode. They went back to the archives and pulled a lot of great clips featuring sports stars together to celebrate the big game. I'd seen most of the skits before. Some were worth watching again, like the Tim Tebow/Jesus/Bears skit or the Maya Rudolph National Anthem one, but there were a few I had never seen before. I don't remember why, but I had never seen the Peyton Manning episode and his skits WERE super funny. Also a realllly old one featuring a very young Ray Romano and Tim Meadows doing Sportcenter.   Loved David Spade as Scott Hamilton and forgot how hilarious Chris Farley was with Nancy Kerrigan. Really great compilation actually.

Vampire Diaries
You'd think that being immortal would be relatively easy, but there seems to be all these downsides to being a vampire. I mean, sure, you can't get in to every party unless the host is conveniently located near the door, and sure you have to kill people if you don't have access to a blood bank. Oh and there's that vervane thing, werewolves, certain wood spears, hybrids, vampire hunters and witches to contend with. Once you have all that handled and have mastered the vampire life there's now a new curve ball...travellers. Can we EVER just have a party in Mystic Falls where the guys take their shirts off and make out with the girls? Soooo much drama! I thought I was in the clear with all the doppelgangers out of the picture...not when Julie Plec has her way. We're still dealing with this Katherine/Elena madness. I for one, don't like it. One other thing, how do all these fireplaces and candles get lit all the time without someone scrambling for matches or wood or anything. Is it all magic even when there aren't witches around. Vampires can't light things up on their own can they? Net/Net Katherine's in Elena's body, and this guy Enzo's back to get Damon back into killer mode and Tyler's pissed that Caroline slept with Klaus. Of course the shows good, but sometimes I'd just like to go old school.

Nashville
Now FINALLY, Scarlett's getting interesting. I was sort of hoping that Liam would lay down more than just her vocal tracks, but maybe that'll come in time. Must be fun when two superstars date. Luke got Rayna on a Nascar CAR, into the garage and onto the track to help promote her new album. That's the kind of thing I just can't make happen for my car loving husband. What I can do though, is take a page from the Juliette Barnes cookbook...pasta and ketchup! I actually used to LOVE that when I was little. Funny that's the dinner that she finally seduced Avery with. Sam Boone was supposed to be Sam Walton from Walmart right? Nice little statement made there about how artists are treated in those stores huh? Loved that Layla is basically a body filled with nothing. No thoughts of her own, nothing to put down on paper at all. In a town where making music seems so easy, must be a real bummer when you can't write a song at all. Coupla good cameos, Brad Paisley and Austin Dillon. I guess now that Kim's home again, Brad can repay the favor to the producers for giving his wife a job for a while.

THE OTHER STUFF

Everyone keeps talking about this Seinfeld reunion. Hoping it's just a Superbowl commercial or Jerry's getting a limo and throwing the entire cast into it for an Comedians in Cars Getting Coffee "very special episode".

I'm not doing Black Sails on Starz. I think I mentioned that pirates aren't my thing, but if you're feeling the need to binge the show. No worries, Starz will be running a on March 15th that will end with the season finale. I'll remind you again in March.

Puppy Bowl, Kitten Bowl or Fish Bowl? Which one you watching?

Top Chef fans, good news, 12th season's a go.

Banshee fans, also good news, season 3's a go.

Friday's Trivia Question: This question came in from Bob Kaplan over at CBS. I loved it so much that I pre-empted James's other questions. Thanks Bob! Prior to 2014, name the last 5 Super Bowl Halftime performers.

Have a great weekend, enjoy the game and the commercials!
